A backing that lets a concrete slab breathe

Water vapour is the physical difference between this tile and a PVC-backed one, and the reason to pick it. Of 48 flooring contractors we surveyed at The Canton Fair in Guangzhou, 31 named slab moisture as the leading cause of carpet tile failure, and all wanted the reading before the order. A PVC sheet is a vapour barrier, so moisture rising through a slab collects beneath the tile and can blister an edge. Our eco-friendly backing is a bonded web of recycled PET fibres, letting the slab dry upward through the floor while the tile stays dimensionally unchanged.

Being a fibre web rather than a dense sheet changes the tile in three other ways. It is softer underfoot, absorbing impact a rigid sheet reflects, and it forgives minor slab undulation. What it will not do is hold the print register of glass-fibre-reinforced PVC, because a compressible web cannot be punched to the same tolerance.

Where the recycled content sits and what it means for a project

Bottle-grade post-consumer PET forms the backing, and the construction contains no bitumen. Bitumen gives traditional felt and asphalt backings their smell in a warm room, so leaving it out removes the source of most odour complaints after a school installation. Recycled PET also carries a lower embodied carbon figure than virgin PVC compound, and we supply the recycled content declaration with the quotation.

Nothing about a recycled polymer makes the tile weaker. Tuft bind measures between 36 N and 44 N to ISO 4919, the same band as our PVC-backed tiles, because tuft bind is set by the pre-coat and primary backing. Abrasion runs to ISO 12947-2 at 5 kPa inside the 34,000 to 46,000 rub band, and peel strength measures 30 N/50 mm to 38 N/50 mm. The tile is not compostable.

Part 4: Product Features & Applications

This tile belongs where the slab story is uncertain and the rooms are in daily use: primary and secondary classrooms, school libraries and dining halls, ground-floor shops, and office floors above a car park. Those are the interiors where a moisture problem does not announce itself as a leak. It appears months later as a lifted edge or a soft spot under a desk.

1. Cushion backing, moisture and the layer beneath the print

Impact sound is the bonus of a fibrous backing, and it is measurable. Tested to ISO 717-2, this construction reduces impact sound by 16 dB, against roughly 4 to 6 dB for a rigid sheet backing on the same slab. In a multi-storey school that is why a classroom floor stops sounding like a drum. Static loading to ISO 3416 gives 8 to 14 % thickness loss.

Moisture management is a whole-system question. The backing lets vapour move, but the adhesive under it must allow vapour too, which is why we specify a water-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive rather than a solvent-based product that skins over. Substrate moisture should be measured first: we ask for a calcium carbide reading and work to a 75 % relative humidity equivalent limit.

2. Education and retail interiors where humidity will not sit still

Brisbane shows why this tile exists, because the climate swings and buildings are cooled hard in summer. A primary school there asked us to quote 1,600 m2 across eight classrooms, a library and two corridor runs, on a ground-floor slab that had already failed once. The previous floor was a vinyl-backed tile that cupped within a year.

The order ran to 6,400 printed tiles in the 50 cm square format with the school's leaf-and-line graphic in two colours, laid with a water-based acrylic adhesive after the slab was ground and the moisture reading logged at 71 %. Impact sound reduction measured 16 dB to ISO 717-2, which the school noticed in the library above a music room. Two summers on, no edge cupping in any classroom.

3. Slab moisture and the cupping you see at a tile edge

Cupping is simple to diagnose. Water vapour moves up through a slab under slight pressure, meets a backing that will not let it pass, and builds under the tile. The pressure finds the weakest point, the edge, and the corner lifts by a millimetre or two. Once the corner is up, foot traffic works it and adhesive releases along the edge.

Three things prevent it, and this product carries the first two. A backing that transmits vapour removes the pressure source. A water-based acrylic adhesive that also transmits vapour keeps the bond intact while the slab dries. The third is measurement: calcium carbide readings at three points per room, and more where a floor has failed.

One Brisbane primary school needed 1,600 m2 replaced across eight classrooms, a library and two corridor runs. The existing vinyl-backed tile had cupped at the edges within twelve months, and the facilities manager traced it to slab moisture the previous specification never measured. The work had to fit a two-week holiday window.

Measurement came first. Calcium carbide readings came back at 71 % relative humidity equivalent, below our 75 % working limit, so no surface membrane was needed. The specification went to 6,400 nylon printed tiles on the recycled PET backing, laid with a water-based acrylic adhesive over a primed slab. Impact sound reduction measured 16 dB to ISO 717-2, and two years on there is no cupping.

Quality Assurance & Testing

Testing the backing as well as the face

Testing usually covers the face, and the backing stays unmentioned, which here is the wrong way round. Both go through our QC lab. The face is checked for abrasion to ISO 12947-2 at 5 kPa with batches in the 34,000 to 46,000 rub band, and for colour fastness to light to ISO 105-B02 at Grade 5 to 7. The laminate is checked for tuft bind to ISO 4919 and peel strength of 30 N/50 mm to 38 N/50 mm.

Fire performance is EN 13501-1 class Bfl-s1 through EN ISO 9239-1 and EN ISO 11925-2, static loading to ISO 3416 falls between 8 % and 14 %, and use classification is ISO 10874 class 33 heavy commercial under EN 1307. Emissions are tested to GB 18587-2001 at Class A. Ask any supplier for the ISO 10874 classification of the exact construction quoted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tile need a longer acclimatisation period than a PVC-backed tile?

Allow 24 hours at room temperature before laying, the same as our PVC-backed tiles, but add a step: open the cartons while the heating or cooling already runs, so the tile reaches the humidity it will live in. On a newly finished screed, we ask for the slab to be at least 28 days old with moisture readings logged first.

Will a spill soak through the backing and reach the slab?

Liquid left standing will pass slowly through a vapour-permeable backing, which is the trade for letting a slab dry. In a classroom or a shop, blot liquid within a few minutes and the adhesive stays unaffected. This backing suits normal commercial wetting, not a wet room, a commercial kitchen or a plant room.

Does the recycled PET backing carry any odour of its own?

The odour is minimal, because there is no bitumen in the construction, so the asphalt smell that lingers in a warm corridor after installation is absent. The recycled polymer is washed and extruded before it becomes backing, and the low-emission adhesive we specify contributes less odour than a solvent-based alternative. Ventilate during installation as a matter of practice.

What happens to the tile at the end of its life?

Returned tiles come back to us and the backing is channelled into a recycling stream rather than landfill, subject to volume and location. This is an arrangement rather than a closed loop: the nylon face and the PET backing are separated before reprocessing, and not every market has a collection route we can reach.

Texture, packing and specification notes

The face is a level loop pile in nylon, 6 mm high at 550 g/m2, firm underfoot while the backing adds a give a rigid tile does not have. Printed colour sits down in the loop rather than on top of it, which gives the design a matte depth. Turn a tile over and the backing reads as a pale grey fibre web.

Installation uses a water-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive over a flat, dry, primed slab, with double-sided tape acceptable only for a small area. Ordering starts with artwork and a strike-off tile sent for approval, and custom runs start at 500 m2, which is 2,000 tiles.
