Wool Woven Carpet for Luxury Public Interiors

LUCK Carpet is a wool weaving mill in Foshan, Guangdong, and this page covers the Wool Woven Wall to Wall Carpet for Luxury Place: a 100 % wool cut pile broadloom at 10 mm pile height and 1200 g/m², supplied 4 m (13.1 ft) wide on an anti-slip textile backing. The pile is woven into the backing on the loom rather than tufted through a prepared substrate, so the pattern is engineered in the warp instead of printed on the surface. Grand lobbies, ballrooms and flagship stores buy it for that reason.

Part 1: Description

Part 2: In-Depth Product Introduction

Loom density is what a large-scale pattern is actually made of

Stand twelve metres back from a three-metre motif in a hotel lobby and you see colour, not texture. That colour is dyed yarn standing at a fixed height, and loom density sets how tightly it is packed. This face runs at 10 mm and 1200 g/m²: over a kilogram of wool standing upright on every square metre. Packed that closely, the pile traps light between the yarn ends and returns it as shade, so a large motif reads with depth.

Printed faces carry the design in a coating on the pile tips, and the pattern lasts as long as that coating does. A tufted face depends on how yarn was inserted after the backing was made. Both routes cost less. Neither holds a three-metre motif through fifteen years of lobby traffic, because wool takes dye into the fibre and the woven face carries that colour through its full thickness. Wear reveals more of the same shade, not a pale core.

From buyer artwork to the first woven metre

Every custom design starts as buyer artwork and ends as a beam of dyed wool on one of our looms. Between those points sits a colour conversation: which shades can be matched in wool at a repeatable dye lot, which have to move a step to survive south-facing glazing, and which fine lines vanish once the yarn stands 10 mm tall. We send a strike-off, a woven sample of the design at full scale, and nothing goes on the loom until it is signed. Our Foshan plant covers 26,000 m² and employs 180 staff, and we have been exporting woven, tufted and printed carpet for 14 years.

Once the loom is running, the checks are geometric. Pile height is measured across the full woven width and held to plus or minus 0.5 mm, because a panel that drifts by a millimetre from selvedge to selvedge shows as a band of light in a room with tall windows. Dimensional stability is tested to ISO 2551 and lands under 0.2 % length change. Our lab also checks repeat position on the first and last metre of every roll; across the last eleven batches the repeat sat inside 2 mm of the approved strike-off.

Part 3: Technical Specification Table

The table below is what we quote and manufacture to. Values are measured on the finished roll in our Foshan plant, and SGS, Intertek or BV can repeat any of them at the plant before shipment. One reading note: Bfl-s1 applies to this carpet on this anti-slip textile backing. Change the underlay or the adhesive and you change the tested system.

Part 4: Product Features & Applications

Luxury venues are judged at the door and again at the far end of the room. A grand lobby, a ballroom the size of a tennis court and a flagship store ask the same thing of a floor: hold the design at scale, hold it underfoot, and stay quiet about it. The sections below deal with face density, room type and pattern distortion at the joint.

1. What a dense woven face gives a large-scale pattern

Pattern at scale fails in traffic lanes first. A lobby pulls people along a line from the entrance to the desk, and pile that crushes along that line turns a rich motif into a pale stripe within two seasons. We test for it with ISO 12947-2 at 5 kPa, and this construction records between 40,000 and 60,000 rubs to defined change. Colour is the second exposure: a glazed lobby takes daylight all year, so ISO 105-B02 light fastness is reported at Grade 6-7 and ISO 105-X12 rubbing fastness at Grade 4-5.

Density also governs how a big motif behaves at a joint. Two panels joined in the middle of a ballroom have to read as one motif, and that depends on both sharing a pile height and a yarn bulk, not just a colour reference. At 1200 g/m² the face has enough mass for the joint to disappear into the pile lay once the carpet is stretched and the pile lifted along the seam. Under a grand piano the pile compresses and recovers rather than flattening, because wool crimp works as a spring.

2. Grand lobby, ballroom, flagship store: one construction, three logics

Lobbies want durability in a narrow lane and beauty everywhere else. The ballroom wants a pattern that survives a full dance floor in heels, plus acoustics that keep a speech intelligible at the far table. A flagship store wants a floor that frames product and takes the wheels of a display trolley. The same carpet answers all three, though the reasoning differs. In a ballroom we run the pattern up the room, leading guests from entrance to top table, and keep the joint under a fixed banquette line.

Physical details decide more than photographs do. The ballroom and lobby in Geneva described below needed the motif to run unbroken through every joint and to hold at a ceiling height of 7 m, where banding in the pile is visible from the gallery. We wove that order on one loom set from one dye lot and numbered every roll, so the fitting team could lay them in weave sequence and keep the pile lay pointing the same way.

3. Pattern distortion across a wide woven panel, and how we control it

Wide woven panels can bow, skew or lose repeat registration for three reasons, and none of them is the design. Loom tension is the first: if the warp is uneven, one selvedge runs longer and the motif tilts by the end of a roll. Humidity is the second: a roll cut in a cold warehouse and laid in a heated lobby the same day can move enough to open a joint. Re-ordering is the third: a batch woven months later can land the repeat a few millimetres out, invisible on a sample and obvious across a ballroom.

Numbers make the controls auditable. Dimensional stability is tested to ISO 2551 and stays under 0.2 % length change after wet cleaning, and repeat position on a re-order is held within 3 mm of the approved strike-off. If the building is listed and the floor cannot take a tackless strip, tell us at quotation stage, because the anti-slip textile backing behaves differently over a direct-glue system. If the motif must be symmetrical around a dome or a central stair, send the reflected ceiling plan too.

Case Study

Geneva, Switzerland: 1,450 m² of ballroom and lobby on one loom set

Three levels and one motif: a lakeside grand hotel in Geneva refurbished its ballroom, foyer and arrivals lobby, a net carpet area of 1,450 m². The brief asked for one large botanical motif, taken from the building's 1904 ceiling plasterwork, running continuously from the lobby steps into the ballroom. We wove 16 rolls of 25 linear metres from a single dye lot on one loom set, after the designers approved a strike-off under the room's own lighting.

Roll numbers let the fitters lay the carpet in weave sequence, which kept the pile lay pointing the same way through the foyer. Measured 20 months after handover, pile height across the main traffic lane sat inside the plus or minus 0.5 mm tolerance, a core sample re-tested to ISO 3416 showed 12 % thickness loss under static load, and the hotel had logged no seam or pattern complaint across 41 joints.

Quality Assurance & Testing

What we test on a woven wool broadloom, and what to ask for

Fire classification for this construction is Bfl-s1 to EN 13501-1, supported by EN ISO 9239-1 for the radiant panel and EN ISO 11925-2 for the small flame, and an insurer will want the report rather than a claim. Abrasion runs to ISO 12947-2 at 5 kPa and lands between 40,000 and 60,000 rubs. Colour fastness is reported to ISO 105-B02 at Grade 6-7 and ISO 105-X12 at Grade 4-5, dimensional stability to ISO 2551 stays under 0.2 %, and laminate peel strength reads 32 to 40 N/50 mm. There is no tuft bind figure, because nothing is tufted: the pile is woven into the backing, so we publish the laminate peel instead. Ask any supplier for the method number, the test house and the date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match the pattern if we re-order in two years?

Yes, on repeat position. We keep the design, the loom set-up and the yarn recipe on file, then send a fresh strike-off for approval before the second run. The dye lot will differ, so expect a small colour tolerance. Venues that hold attic stock from the first delivery rarely need a full re-order.

Is a cut pile wool carpet right for a lobby with trolley traffic?

In the walking lane, yes. Woven wool at this weight sits in class 33 heavy commercial use under ISO 10874. Trolley wheels and castors concentrate load on a few yarn ends, so we ask for a 1 mm allowance and a hard strip behind the bell desk where trolleys park. Lobby claims usually start from that parked position.

How much extra should we order, and how long does it take?

Carry 8 % to 12 % above the measured area on a room with columns, an angled bay or a curved stair, and around 5 % on a plain rectangle. Add one roll as attic stock for a venue that will run for a decade. Custom designs start at 300 m² per design, with 35 to 45 days after strike-off approval.

Product Details

The roll, the lay and how to order

Surface feel is a matter of density: cut pile wool at 10 mm feels firm under a hand rather than spongy, with the faint lanolin softness that wool keeps after scouring. Colour sits deep in the yarn: seen at an angle the design darkens, seen square on it opens up, which is why this carpet flatters a room with side light. Rolls arrive 4 m (13.1 ft) wide with a woven selvedge, both edges trimmed and sealed, each wrapped in poly with the roll number and weave direction marked outside.

Underlay choice matters. Lay the carpet over a quality underlay on a tackless strip where the subfloor allows, or direct-glue it with a low-VOC adhesive over a sound screed, and let the rolls acclimatise on site for a day before cutting. Every roll carries an eight-year warranty on the face pile. Send drawings and we will quote with a seam plan. LUCK Carpet weaves in Foshan and ships worldwide, with third-party inspection available at the plant, and we show at DOMOTEX Hannover, The Canton Fair in Guangzhou and Shanghai Hospitality Design Week.
